Small town Mississippi is still our destination today with the first stop shown on a 1940s Colourpicture dual view postcard of Confederate Square in downtown Grenada Mississippi, the county seat of Grenada County.

Our next postcard is a 1939 Curt Teich postcard with a great view of the swimming pool in Greenwood Mississippi which is the county seat of Leflore County. Located on the Tallahatchie River and Yazoo River, the city was a major shipping point to New Orleans, Vicksburg, Memphis and St. Louis prior to the Civil War. Both of these postcards are available in my Mississippi listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Today I have two more Mississippi school post cards to share with you and the first is a 1942 Curt Teich linen postcard of the Brookhaven Elementary School in Brookhaven Mississippi. This is an impressive school for a town of approximately 5,000 people at the time and may be one of the reasons the size has doubled since then.

The second school is a beautiful art deco style design Grammar school in Tupelo Mississippi and is shown on a 1940 Curt Teich postcard. Tupelo was also a town of around 5,000 people at the time which has grown to over 34,000 today. Both of these postcards can be found in my Mississippi listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Schools were the pride of towns, cities and states from 1900 on with the relentless pursuit of a public education for all Americans. Postcards were a popular way to document the progress of this effort and show the world that you town was progressive and a great place to live and raise a family. The first view is a 1940 Curt Teich linen postcard showing the Franklin Academy in Columbus Mississippi with the Auditorium in the foreground.

The second post card is a 1936 Curteich linen postcard and shows the Whitfield Auditorium at the Mississippi State College for Women, the first state supported college for the higher education of women in the United States. Both of these postcards are available in my Mississippi listings along with 10,000 additional post cards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Young people today often hear their parents or grandparents talk fondly about how things "use to be" and "everything was much simpler" but probably do not pursue what we are talking about. If you have some old antique postcards, pull them out show the younger generation exactly what you are talking about. The postcard below should get the attention of anyone who has traveled to another country in the 21st century of just how much things have changed. This is a 1930s E. C. Kropp post card showing the U. S. Custom house and the Gateway bridge between Brownsville Texas and Mexico. This postcard is available in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Strategy is important when you are buying post cards and many different opportunities will be available to you as a collector. Shown below are three of four circa 1907 postcards of Goldthwaite Texas which I bought together because I was familiar with the town since I grew up near there and had never seen postcards on it before. Located near Brownwood Texas, it is the county seat of Mills County, was established in 1885 after the arrival of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and was named for the man who auctioned off the town lots. It had 1,200 people by 1898, 2,800 people by 1928, declined to 1,324 by 1931 and was 1,802 in 2000. The small size was certainly a factor is limiting the number of postcards. These post cards were ordered and sold by Clements Drug Store which can be seen (second store from the right) in the last view below. I was fortunate that the postcards had been kept together for almost 100 years and when I sold them, they all went to the same customer. Having all of three of them tells a much better story of their origin and increases the value of each one. When you get a chance, buy the group! I have over 10,000 postcards available on my website Moody's Postcards so start or add to your collection today.

My last two articles have covered iron ore mining and grain harvesting in Minnesota so today I am bringing the two together. Both of the post cards shown are 1940s E. C. Kropp linen postcards of the port facilities at the Duluth Superior Minnesota harbor. This is a land locked harbor that had 54 miles of docks and was second only to New York in tonnage at that time. The first postcard shows grain being loaded in a freighter.

The second post card shows the freighter John & Cowle at the giant iron ore loading docks. Both of these post cards are available in my Minnesota listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

The last article covered the wheat harvest in Minnesota so today I wanted to touch another engine of the Minnesota economy which is iron ore mining. The first postcard shows a typical surface plant of the underground Godfrey Mine in Hibbing Minnesota. The information on the back of the 1937 Curteich postcard says the mine was four miles east of Hibbing, had two levels, was 270 feet deep and covered 200 acres.

The next view is a circa 1916 E. C. Kropp postcard showing a Great Northern railroad mallet type train engine drawing 120 ore cars near Hibbing Minnesota. Both of these post cards are available in my Minnesota listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

We often talk about the good old days but I'm not sure if the circa 1908 Albertype postcard below confirms or disputes that. I guess it all depends if you are the owner sitting in the buggy overseeing the work or if you are one of the hands stacking the thrashed grain. I counted at least 6 horse drawn thrashing machines, there are 15 workers on the ground and you can see cut grain as far as the eye can see. It wasn't fast but they got the job done and created a lot of jobs. This postcard can be found in my Minnesota listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Postcard sellers have some fairly standard terms they use when describing post cards but everybody is subject to their own peculiar words to describe the unusual traits. I would describe the postcard below as a "multi view" since it has four views on a single postcard. If it had only two views, I would use "dual view". As I started looking at this card, I saw four pictures so assumed it showed four different sights in the city of Corpus Christi Texas. But then I noticed that the top two images were of the same house even though one was titled "On the Bluff" and the other specified "Residence of J. G. Kenedy". The bottom images show the Seaside Hotel and Alta Vista Hotel also in Corpus Christi Texas. I am sure the captions are all correct but it seems odd that when the postcard was laid out that they couldn't find another residence or hotel picture to use. This is a circa 1908 C. E. Wheelock & Company postcard and it can be found in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage 1908 Postcards of Kalamazoo Michigan

Kalamazoo Michigan was settled by Native Americans thousands of years ago but it wasn't until fur traders came to the area in the late 1700s that Europeans settled there. During the War of 1812, the British had a prison camp in the area and in 1831 the village was laid out and named Bronson after Titus Bronson who built the first house there. He was later run out of town and the town was renamed Kalamazoo in 1836. The town is on the Kalamazoo River and about half way between Detroit and Chicago. The population was 39,437 in the 1908 census and was 81,300 in the 2000 census. The first view is a circa 1908 Hugh C. Leighton Company post card showing the Elks' Temple which is a little unusual looking and has a sign on the front that says "Cafe".

The second view is a circa 1906 Souvenir Postcard Company post card showing the beautiful Public Library with two horse and buggies in front, a bicycle, two ladies and a dog posing on the steps. Prior to March 1907, only the address could be placed on the back of the postcard so manufacturers usually left a white space on the front for a brief message. Both of these postcards are available in my Michigan listings along with 10,000 additional post cards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Owosso Michigan is a city in Shiawassee County named after Chief Wasso, a leader of the Ojibwa Indians. The town was incorporated as a city in 1859 with a population of about 1,000, had a population of 9,639 in 1908 and had grown to 15,713 as of the 2000 census. The old 1914 Curt Teich postcard of the day shows downtown along West Main Street with the streetcar tracks down the middle of the street. The first streetcar line was built in 1893, ran between Owosso and Corunna and was steam powered but converted to electricity a couple of years later. Around 1908, the Jackson to Lansing line of the Michigan Electric Railways was finished. Today I want to share a Paris post card with you and this one is not in France, but Texas. The first settlers arrived in the 1820s, the town was founded in 1844 when it was designated the county seat of Lamar County and by the Civil War had about 700 residents who relied on cattle and farming. The original town name was Pinhook but was changed to Paris and yes it was named after Paris France. The first railroad was the Texas and Pacific which arrived in 1876 followed by the Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad and the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad in 1887, the Texas Midland Railroad in 1893 and the Paris & Mount Pleasant Railroad, the Pa-Ma Line, in 1910. By then the population was 11,269 growing to 15,649 by 1930, 21,636 by the 1950s and was just under 26,000 in 2000.

This 1920s E. C. Kropp postcard shows the Masonic Temple with the Chamber of Commerce on the street level. This postcard is available in my Texas listing along with an additional 10,000 postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage 1905 Postcards Ypsilanti & Lansing Micigan

Schools are a very popular subject on old postcards because towns wanted to show off their public education facilities. Our first example is a 1904 view of the Michigan Industrial School for Boys in Lansing Michigan and yes, there were Industrial Schools for Girls too. The students are lined up in front of the school and all are in the school uniform.

Our second school post card is a 1906 view of the Michigan State Normal School in Ypsilanti Michigan. Before I started collecting postcards, I had not heard of "normal" schools but soon found out that they were schools for teachers which were in high demand due to the rush to build public schools in every town. This particular post card was printed by the Rotograph Company in Germany which produced very high quality cards. Both of these postcards can be found in my Michigan listings along with an additional 10,000 post cards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Arthur Livingston was a premier postcard publisher from New York and among his better productions was the "Greetings from Picturesque America" series of 50 undivided back postcards around 1905. These are very easy to spot with a vignette of a lady holding an American flag with an Eagle behind her and a scroll in her right hand that says "Greetings from Picturesque America". Most of these post cards had significant white space on the front for the sender to put their message since only the address could appear on the backs until March 1907. The first example shows the Georgia Railroad Bank in Augusta Georgia.

The second post card shows the beautiful interior of St. Paul's Church in Augusta Georgia.

The third example shows the Hampton Terrace Hotel in Augusta Georgia. Many other cities were also represented in the series of 50. These postcards can be found in my Georgia listings along with 10,000 additional post cards on my website Moody's Postcards.

1908 Old Antique Vintage Postcard of the Palmer Massachusetts Fair

Postcards showing local or state fairs are very popular among postcard collectors and our post card of the day illustrates that the fairs were very popular in the early 1900s just like they are today. Special acts were brought in then as now and, if you look at 9 o'clock on the post card below, you will see rigging for some sort of circus act or show. This is a circa 1908 postcard showing the Palmer Fair in Palmer Massachusetts, a town of about 8,500 people at that time. There are several tents set up but there is no indication of what they were used for. There appears to be a horse show or sale going on in the background but most of the people seem to just be milling around. In the lower right corner are four large horse drawn wagons that have rows of seats on each side that hold about five people. I am sure somebody figured a way to make some money taking people around the fair grounds and providing them with a superior view. Keep your eyes open for fair postcards and remember that more activity they show the better they are as far as price is concerned. This postcard can be found in my Massachusetts listings along with 10,000 additional post cards on my website Moody's Postcards.
