Today's post card is a fabulous circa 1908 view of the Farmers & Merchants Milling Company in Grapevine Texas and has an advertised capacity of 100 BBLs of Flour or 50 BBLs of Meal. Two employees are standing in the door with a hand truck and will gladly load your wagon up. They also advertise that they do bulk shipments to Cotton Belt & Frisco railroad points. The last two posts have covered early Texas High Schools so today we move it up a notch to a couple of Colleges. The first is the beautiful State Medical College in Galveston Texas which has a very unusual design with the rounded ends and a very elaborate entrance and is shown here on a 1919 Curt Teich post card.

The second view is the Mary Conner College in Paris Texas which seems to have the school in the front of the building and a dormitory in the back of the building. This appears to be a woman's college, the correct spelling is probably Mary Connor College and the only other information I could find was that it was out of business by 1924 or earlier. More Texas High Schools on tap for today with the first one being from Cleburne Texas. This school is unusual in that it is a wooden structure rather than the usual brick or stone used in the early 1900s which may indicate that is was fairly old even at this time. This is a circa 1908 Albertype postcard.

The second post card shows Ball High School in Galveston Texas and this is a really imposing structure that looks more like a state capitol than a high school. It is back to school time and all the kids are headed off to their air conditioned schools in the August heat. I thought I would feature some circa 1908 Texas high schools just to remind everyone of how things use to be. The pre air conditioner generations survived with high ceilings, open transoms, open windows and prayers for a breeze. They also did not start school in the first week of August like we do now and they didn't have all the holidays the kids enjoy today. The kids were needed to harvest the crops so that had to be done before heading back to school too. The first post card shows the Gainesville Texas High School and it is postmarked 27 Sept 1910. The sender was a teacher and says "Have had a lovely vacation and will begin teaching the middle of next week" which puts the start of school in early October.

Today's post card is an exceptional view of downtown Cheyenne Wyoming and I suspect it was taken during July. I base this on the fact that the trees and grass are green, the sign on the top of the tallest building on the left advertises the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo and shows the date of July 21-25 and the street is lined with lots of flags for the occasion. The street shown is Capitol Avenue which runs from the Union Pacific Railroad Depot to the entrance of the Capitol which you can see in the distance. Visible along the street are Normandie on the left and Skaggs and the Paramount movie theater on the right. This is a great 1938 Curteich, Curt Teich linen postcard with vibrant colors. Country Clubs are normally pretty swanky places with beautiful lawns, golf courses and a very nice club house. The postcard for today is no exception and comes to us from Dallas Texas. You begin with a nice lake flowing over the dam which has a pedestrian bridge over it so the golfers can move around the golf course. High on the hill is a beautiful club house that would make any club member proud. While there are many perks to belonging to a prestigious golf club, there is also the matter of the initial membership fee and of course the monthly dues which keep this paradise up to par. Today I want to share a 1920s advertising post card by the Burlington Railroad for a Dude Ranch in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. This one has a great bird's eye view of the ranch tucked away in a valley with the mountains in the background. The text says "Where Eastern city men live at the homes of ranchers, become cowboys on their vacations and enjoy outdoor life par excellence on horseback while improving physically".
