The first post card today is a 1920s E. C. Kropp postcard of the Union Railroad Depot in Shreveport Louisiana. This particular view is what I call a "street side view" and in this case gives us a close up view of the vintage automobiles.

The second Shreveport Louisiana view is also a 1920s E. C. Kropp postcard and is an excellent view of the Y. M. C. A. Both of these postcards are available in my Louisiana listings along with an additional 10,000 postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Let's take a look around Georgia today and start in Thunderbolt which was just five miles from Savannah in 1910. This is a Hugh C. Leighton 1910 postcard of the Thunderbolt Casino which was famous for its fish and oysters.

The next stop is a 1930s real photo postcard of the Georgia Fisheries at Summerville Georgia and shows the rearing pond and troughs.

Our last stop is the new swimming pool at Indian Springs Georgia which was and is now a Georgia State Park. This is a 1940 Curt Teich linen postcard which says that the park is served by Greyhound buses and the Southern Railroad. All of these post cards are available in my Georgia listings along with an additional 10,000 postcards on my website at Moody's Postcards.

Kansas City Missouri is today's destination and the first stop is right in the middle of downtown on this 1922 Curt Teich postcard. This is Walnut Street looking North from Tenth Street which is one of the principal business thoroughfares of Kansas City. The printed information on the back says "This one block contains eleven banks. Kansas City ranks fourth in bank clearings." They also seem to have a traffic problem since I counted eight streetcars or trolleys and I don't think you could get another automobile on this stretch of road. On the left is National City Bank and in the right foreground is a sign for "De Looze Hat". You should always check street scenes for business names, pool halls, saloons or any other unique or unusual business because that can add value to the post card.

Moving from business to fun, the next postcard is also a Curt Teich production from 1909 and shows the Music Pavilion, Electric Tower and Chutes in Electric Park, "Kansas City's Coney Island". The Labor Day message on the back gives some interesting information about the park as the sender tries to convince her friend in Newbern Tennessee to visit and enjoy the park. She says "The parks are still open. Carnival closes tomorrow and Electric runs about a week longer. Wish you could be here to go to the Corn Carnival at Electric. Today is Labor Day & there is amusement galore. Ringling Brothers Circus, all the Parks & Theater. You are missing a whole lot." Nothing like rubbing it in. Postcards of amusement parks are very popular so be sure to look for them and the more rides showing, the better. Both of these postcards are available in my Missouri listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage Court House Postcards Weatherford & Gonzales Texas

I am going back to one of my favorite subjects today so I can show you two more beautiful court houses. The first one is a close up view of the Parker County Court House in Weatherford Texas which has a sign declaring Weatherford as the "Texas Fruit & Dairy Center". This is a 1950s Colourpicture postcard and on the back it says that the County was "named in honor of Cynthia Ann Parker, first white child born in this county. Later captured by the Indians and became the bride of Chief of the Tribe". Picking up these little historical facts is what makes postcards so interesting.

The second post card is a 1939 Curteich linen postcard of the Gonzales County Court House in Gonzales Texas. Gonzales was one of the earliest Anglo American settlements in Texas but was abandoned in 1826 after two Inidan attacks and was rebuilt nearby in 1827. Both of these postcards are available in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Churches are a very popular postcard subject and good sellers no matter where they are located. While most people will collect churches in their home town or churches they have attended in their lifetime, I would like to suggest another reason to collect churches. You might want to consider "unusual" looking churches such as the three churches below. The first is the First Methodist Church in Paris Texas and is a 1940s Graycraft Card Company post card.

The next one is the Prospect Avenue Congregational Church at 29th and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City Missouri and is on a circa 1908 Elite Post Card Company postcard.

The last one is circa 1908 S. H. Kress Company postcard of the Christian Church in Sherman Texas. All of these postcards are available in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage Postcards of Waxahachie & Sherman Texas Court Houses

Today I want to visit two County Court Houses in the great state of Texas. Court Houses are a very popular subject for post card collectors since thousands of judges, lawyers, clerks and county employees work in these buildings and are rightly proud of their beauty. The first stop is Waxahacie Texas in the 1940s to see the beautiful Ellis County Court House which is still in use today and essentially unchanged on the exterior from this real photo post card. Waxahachie has grown from 6,205 people in 1908 to 21,426 in the 2000 census. The name Waxahacie is an Indian name meaning "cow creek" or "buffalo creek".

The second court house postcard is a 1908 view of the Grayson County Court House in Sherman Texas and also provides a great view of the businesses arount the Court House Square. Sherman was named the county seat in 1846 at the time the county was created. Population in 1908 was 12,412, grew to just over 15,000 by 1930 and had 37,710 in the 2000 census. Both of these postcards can be found in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage El Paso & Dallas Texas Hospital Postcards

While hospitals are not a fun place to be, they do make for good and bad memories in our lives and that makes them a popular postcard subject. The first post card below shows the military hospital William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso Texas. This is a 1926 Curt Teich postcard and shows a ward interior, sunken garden, greenhouse, library, soldiers' barrack, gymnasium and theater. These facilities were used by many soldiers as well as their dependents so a huge amount of people have a connection to this hospital. Postcards with multiple views like this give you an extra bang for you buck.

The second hospital is St. Paul Sanitarium in Dallas Texas and is shown on a 1907 Curt Teich postcard. Located on Bryan Street, this was the first modern hospital in Dallas and in 1898, the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul officially opened the facility. Both of these postcards can be found in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage 1908 Corsicana & Dalhart Texas Postcards

I want to cover some more popular collecting subjects today and will start with this 1908 view of the Felton Opera House, "facing Denrock Avenue", in Dalhart Texas. Even using a magnifying glass, I can not determine where you enter the opera house so I am not sure which street is Denrock Avenue. The street level business on the corner says on the window that it is the First National Bank and to the right of that everything appears to be normal store fronts including a jewelry store. On the second story, all of the signs on the windows indicate lawyer offices or land and title businesses. Opera houses are widely collected and even the smaller towns had them in the early 1900s. These were seen as a valuable town asset and sign of sophistication so postcard publishers usually included them if the town had one.

The second popular collecting subject shown here is the Orphan's Home and this one is sponsored by the Odd Fellows fraternal organization. This is a 1910 Curt Teich post card and this particular home is much larger than most I have seen. This particular postcard will appeal to collectors of Orphan Homes and collectors of Odd Fellows postcards which makes it more desirable. Both of these postcards can be found in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage 1920s Postcards of Fort Clark Texas

Just a quick reminder that the purpose of this blog is to expose you to the hobby of postcard collecting, show you a wide variety of postcards so you can see what is available and to pass along general postcard collecting tips and information.

Military installations are a popular item because there are a ton of veterans out there that were stationed at these facilities. It probably wasn't a fun time but it was an important milestone in their lives and that generates demand for these post cards. There were a lot of WWII bases throughout the United States so today I want to highlight Fort Clark in Texas. Fort Clark was founded in 1852 along with the town of Bracketville and Fort Clark was home to the famous Buffalo Soldiers for many years. The fort remained a cavalry post and almost every U. S. Army cavalry unit was stationed there or trained there. In 1943 the Second Cavalry was activated and was the last horse mounted unit as units were mechanized. This change brought about the closure of Fort Clark in 1946 even though it was used as a German prisoner of war camp until the end of the war in 1945. The three Albertype post cards shown here and produced for Nipper Drug Company are circa 1920 and can be found in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Old Antique Vintage 1918 Real Photo Postcard Sag Harbor New York

I have often talked about REAL PHOTO postcards and the current high demand for them after years of neglect. Today I want to share a great real photo post card, often abbreviated "RPPC", that sold as soon as I listed it and had a great additional piece of information with it. This is a 1918 real photo postcard of the interior of a postcard store in Sag Harbor New York with two post card racks in the center, a candy counter on the left, souvenirs on the right and the owner(s) posing for the picture.

And if that isn't enough to get a postcard collector excited, I was lucky enough to get the manufacturer's invoice for producing the postcards. This great extra piece of information shows the company that made the postcards, the name of the owner of the postcard store, location of the store and the price paid of $0.155 each for 1500 postcards. It just doesn't get much better than this! Even though this postcard has been sold, I have 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Last time I talked about two popular post card subjects, swimming pools and Elks Clubs. Today I want to add two more subjects that are popular with postcard collectors and the first is Convents. The first is on a beautiful E. C. Kropp 1940s linen postcard and shows the Villa de Matel Convent in Houston Texas. This view is the Motherhouse and Novitiate of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

The second view is a 1930s E. C. Kropp view of the combination Gymnasium Auditorium at the University of Texas in Austin Texas. The dual use facility gives you two attractions where many people will remember events they attended there and you get the extra kicker of being a huge University drawing card. You should always remember that the more topics that are shown increase the value as more collectors will be attracted to the postcard. Both of these post cards can be found in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

Collecting postcards is all about connecting to the past and exploring places where you or family members have lived, worked or played in years gone by. I have always touted swimming pool postcards because that is where I spent the most time and had the most fun so I like to compare them with my home town pool. Another popular topic is the local Elks Club Home which were in most larger towns and had a very large membership throughout the United States. These Elks Homes were a popular postcard subject and are widely collected today by locals and Elk club members. The first post card is a 1909 Curt Teich printed postcard published by Fred Harvey and shows the Elks Home in Amarillo Texas.

The second view is a 1907 Paul C. Kober postcard that shows the El Paso Elks Home. Both of these post cards can be found in my Texas listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

When I first started buying old postcards, I would not buy linen postcards because I though they were not old enough but I slowly changed my mind. Curt Teich, or Curteich, started using the high cloth content paper in 1930 because it was cheaper but it wasn't long before everybody else followed their lead. Not only was there a price advantage, but the new inks combined with the linen paper produced some fantastic colors that are highly sought after today. Linens were prominent from 1930 through the 1950s when they began to be replaced by the slick finish chrome postcards. Now the people who grew up in the 1930s through 1950s are over 50 years old and they are looking for the linen post cards that reflect their youth. The baby boomers will be buying up the chrome postcards for the same reason but that story will have to wait for another issue.

The 1940s linen Ashville post card below is typical for these postcards and gives a great hometown view of the Dixie Hunt Hotel in Gainesville Georgia with the Dixie Drug Company on the corner with a great Coca Cola advertising sign. This post card is available in my Georgia listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.

The state of choice today is Louisiana and I will begin with a circa 1908 view of the State Capitol in Baton Rouge because this one is like no others. This beautiful castle like building was replaced a few years later but you can still enjoy it on the Illustrated Post Card Co postcard along with the state seal.

Our next stop is the Young Men's Gymnastic Rowing Club in New Orleans Louisiana shown on the 1907 C. B. Mason postcard. Both of these postcards are available in my Louisiana listings along with an additional 10,000 postcards on my website Moody's Postcards.
